Cancun Airport to Tulum Transfer

Tulum sits about 120 km south of Cancun Airport along federal highway 307. The drive takes between 1 h 35 min and 2 h 15 min depending on the hour: traffic builds around Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras, and Tulum town itself slows down at sunrise and sunset.

It is the most requested long route in the Riviera Maya, and the one where a private transfer differs most from the alternatives: the bus drops you in Tulum town, not in the beach hotel zone, which is another 10 to 20 minutes away along a single-lane road.

What to know about this destination

  • If your hotel is in the beach zone (the Tulum–Boca Paila road), give us the exact name: many entrances have no visible street number and GPS places them wrong.
  • Beach-road hotels often run on generators with patchy signal. Confirm your return pickup the day before by WhatsApp, not on the day itself.
  • Tulum airport (TQO) opened in December 2023. If you are landing there instead of Cancun, tell us — it is a different route and a different rate.

What about the other ways to get there?

ADO bus

About 6 departures a day from the airport, roughly 3 hours door to door. They end at the Tulum town terminal, so you still need a separate taxi or colectivo to the beach zone, with your luggage. Buy ahead: these routes sell out.

Uber

A 2024 court ruling allows Uber to operate at Cancun Airport, but in practice very few drivers accept rides there because of pressure from the local taxi union. Long waits, no driver at all, or being asked to walk off airport grounds with your bags are all common.

Airport taxi

Available without booking, but the fare to Tulum is among the highest at the airport and it is negotiated on the spot, with no written fixed price.

Questions about this transfer

How long is the drive from Cancun Airport to Tulum?

Between 1 h 35 min and 2 h 15 min. Highway 307 is dual carriageway for most of the way, and Playa del Carmen traffic is the biggest variable. Add 10 to 20 minutes if your hotel is in the Tulum beach zone.

Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?

Yes. We track your actual arrival using your flight number and adjust the pickup at no cost. International arrivals include one hour of waiting from touchdown, which normally covers immigration and customs.

Can we stop at a supermarket before the hotel?

Yes, and it is a popular request on this route because many Tulum properties have no shop nearby. Add it as an extra when booking; it takes about 30 minutes, in Playa del Carmen or Tulum town.

Is a round trip worth it if my return flight is very early?

Yes, especially in Tulum: at that hour there is very little transport available in the beach zone. Booking the round trip locks in both the pickup and the price.
