What does vary is the last stretch. Fifth Avenue is closed to traffic and many downtown hotels sit on pedestrian streets, so the driver drops you as close to the entrance as vehicles are allowed — sometimes a block away.

ADO bus
On this particular route it is the most reasonable alternative: frequent departures from the airport and arrival at the downtown terminal, which is genuinely close to many hotels. The weak points are luggage and travelling with children, since you are on your own from the terminal onward.
Uber
Within Playa del Carmen it works normally. The problem is pickup at Cancun Airport: although a 2024 court ruling permits it, pressure from the local taxi union means almost no driver will accept a ride there.
Colectivo van
The 307 colectivos are cheap but do not leave from the airport — you have to reach the highway first. They do not take large luggage and stop at every point along the way.
