Here's the whole year, and what actually happens in each stretch of it.
The four variables that decide your dates
1. Rain and hurricanes. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and its most active part is August, September and October. That doesn't mean six months of all-day rain: in the wet season the norm is a hard afternoon downpour that clears within the hour. It means there's a real chance a storm reshuffles your week, and that in those months travel insurance and cancellable rates are worth having.
2. Sargassum. The seaweed that reaches Caribbean beaches usually intensifies from April to October, with the heaviest arrivals between June and August. Recent years have been the worst on record: 2025 set a record for tonnes collected in Quintana Roo, and 2026 was forecast to beat it. November to February is when beaches tend to be cleanest.
3. Heat and humidity. It's hot all year. The real difference isn't the thermometer, it's the humidity: from May to October the air weighs a great deal more.
4. Crowds and prices. High season runs from late November to early April, peaking at Christmas, New Year and Easter week. July and August bring the second wave, mostly families.

If sargassum is your main worry
Two things that genuinely help:
- Check the map before you book the hotel, not before you fly. Monitoring networks publish beach conditions almost daily, with reports from the community itself. Sargassum is patchy: one beach can be covered and another clean fifteen minutes away.
- Pick the right coast. The weed is pushed in from the open Caribbean, so more sheltered stretches usually suffer less: the north coast of Cancún and Costa Mujeres, Holbox, and the western sides of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. The exposed stretches of Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Tulum tend to take the worst of it.
And a plan B that always works: cenotes don't get sargassum. Nor do the ruins, or Valladolid, or the market in downtown Cancún.
If you're travelling for something specific
- Swimming with whale sharks: mid-May to mid-September, best between June and August.
- The serpent's shadow at Chichén Itzá: the March and September equinoxes. It's the busiest day of the year.
- Hanal Pixán, the peninsula's Day of the Dead: 31 October to 2 November, with events spread over several days around it.
- Diving at its clearest: the water is calm much of the year, but winter nortes can cancel trips on wind.
- Low price without the weather lottery: the first half of May, or November before high season starts.
What doesn't change with the date
Three things are the same all year and are worth settling in advance:
Midday heat. Any outdoor plan — ruins, city, market — works better between seven and eleven in the morning.
Water. Bottled, always, in any month.
